Pastor Robert Lee (Mack) McClain resigns from his church in Kerrville, Texas following the murder of his wife Georgia. Unable to continue his ministry there without Georgia by his side, he sells everything he owns and buys a new Peterbilt truck, returning to the trade he learned from his Uncle Jake.
Hoping for some windshield therapy and peace of mind behind the wheel of his new rig, Mack gets neither after God nudges him to pick up a hitchhiker near the Jordan State Prison outside Mack’s hometown of Pampa, Texas.
The brass ring Mack felt would at last validate his ministry still dangled just beyond his reach after he failed at his quest for a doctorate. Already questioning his call to the ministry, he now feels the Dr. Robert McClain pursuit was just a vain attempt to bury his past.
Mack attempts to run away from it all when his world is ripped apart by Georgia’s death. But he is pursued by God who unbeknownst to Mack is equipping His servant with tools to handle events his seminary education or a doctorate could never have prepared him for.
The story unfolds as the hitchhiker enters Mack’s Peterbilt. The man reminds Mack of his father, a hard living, hard drinking oilfield roughneck who died in prison. God begins to do a work in Mack’s heart while Mack attempts to minister to his new passenger. But Mack rues the day he let the hitchhiker into his truck after the man steals a priceless piece of jewelry worn by Georgia that Mack kept with him as a tangible reminder of his beloved wife.
The mysterious hitchhiker is trouble enough, but Mack’s troubles are compounded when contraband is smuggled onto his rig for transport to his destination of Chicago. A couple of petty criminals, working for a malevolent crime boss incarcerated in the Jordan Unit, stash the goods into Mack’s trailer. The hapless pair hatch a scheme to enrich themselves by stealing the contraband before Mack unloads in the Windy City. The unraveling threads of their plot lead right back to the Jordan Unit.
Ben Garza, a captain with the Texas Rangers who Mack sought help from in the investigation into Georgia’s death, is watching the activity going on in the Jordan Unit. Captain Garza is gathering more evidence before making a bust. As the plot unfolds, Mack has, for him at least, a more important agenda: obtaining justice for Georgia. Both men determine her killer to be Georgia’s doctor.
A high-level, tough as nails, but clean as a whistle FBI agent also becomes involved when the investigation uncovers a sinister plot involving rogue elements inside the U.S. government.
Before he can be arrested, Georgia’s killer leaves his position at the Medical Center in Kerrville and visits Mack’s company to make inquiries about his whereabouts. Mack had angered the doctor with the content of a series of messages he delivered at his church. He determines he is the real target of the doctor’s wrath. After destroying his church ministry, the doctor threatens to destroy his new life on the road as well. Mack suspects he is being followed and is in the sights of a killer who plots a revenge no one could have seen coming.
The hapless pair of thieves, the crime boss, and the government Black Hats all have their own agendas. And each believes something different about what is contained in the contraband smuggled into Mack’s trailer. But all of them are trumped by a possessed and determined killer. Mack knows nothing about the contraband until near the end. What it contains is far worse than anyone imagined.
Throughout the novel, the hitchhiker is a mysterious character who is never seen by anyone but Mack. He is usually referred to as the hitchhiker throughout. Only Mack calls him by his name all the way to a surprise ending that leaves each reader with his or her own interpretation as to the identity of the hitchhiker
