The Early Years
I have loved books and reading as far back as I can remember. And I loved to write. Even when I was very young, I loved strolling through the aisles of bookstores and picking up random books to read. Sometimes, I would be awed by the brilliant prose, and I thought I could never write like that. Then I would pick up another book that was not so well written and would think, if he can write like that and somehow get his book on a shelf in a bookstore, I can too.
This was long before self-publishing made the process much easier. So, I had it in my heart to become a writer from an early age, yet I never pursued writing as a career. Why? Henry Ford said, or at least this quote is attributed to him: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” I didn’t think I could. Therefore, I didn’t.
I never thought I’d amount to much at all since I came from such a rough background. But somehow, the dream lived on. Here's my story:
I was born into a poor family and lived in the shadows cast by the glitzy part of the city in which I grew up. You’ve heard stories about people who were poor but never knew it? When you’re a poor kid from a dysfunctional family in the big city, you know you’re poor.
As a child, I didn't have much. We couldn't afford new clothes or toys, and there were many nights we went to bed hungry. If you are familiar with the movie Sling Blade, you know about biscuits and mustard. Onion sandwiches were my treat. Look up dysfunctional family in an encyclopedia and you’ll see a photo of the McCoy family.
My father was an alcoholic who stayed drunk for twenty-five years straight, as I recall—literally falling down drunk, which he did once when visiting my elementary school. He fell flat on his face on the steps at the entrance of the school. In his defense, he went to the school and bloodied himself to defend me for some infraction I was probably guilty of since I was always in trouble for one thing or another.
My mom was in and out of insane asylums (that’s what they were called in those days). One of my earliest memories is watching Mom talk to the man in the watch she wore on her necklace (a treasured gift from her kids) before she was hauled off to the asylum for shock treatments. Another memory is visiting her and being entertained by some patients who clung to bars and acted like monkeys.
Why do I tell these stories? If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's that comebacks are possible—no matter how rough your background may be. When you're facing difficult times, remember that better days are ahead if you're willing to keep fighting for your dreams.
Perhaps you can see where my passion for storytelling comes from. All of us have stories worth telling. Another thing I’ve learned in life is that even if you come from what may appear to others as a privileged background, you have been through rough times of your own. No one escapes that in this life. All of us have much wisdom to share because of it.

Pastor Robert Lee (Mack) McClain resigns from his church in Kerrville, Texas following the murder of his wife Georgia. Unable to continue his ministry there without Georgia by his side, he sells everything he owns and buys a new Peterbilt truck, returning to the trade he learned from his Uncle Jake.
Hoping for some windshield therapy and peace of mind behind the wheel of his new rig, Mack gets neither after God nudges him to pick up a hitchhiker near the Jordan State Prison outside Mack’s hometown of Pampa, Texas.
The brass ring Mack felt would at last validate his ministry still dangled just beyond his reach after he failed at his quest for a doctorate. Already questioning his call to the ministry, he now feels the Dr. Robert McClain pursuit was just a vain attempt to bury his past.
Mack attempts to run away from it all when his world is ripped apart by Georgia’s death. But he is pursued by God who unbeknownst to Mack is equipping His servant with tools to handle events his seminary education or a doctorate could never have prepared him for.
The story unfolds as the hitchhiker enters Mack’s Peterbilt. The man reminds Mack of his father, a hard living, hard drinking oilfield roughneck who died in prison. God begins to do a work in Mack’s heart while Mack attempts to minister to his new passenger. But Mack rues the day he let the hitchhiker into his truck after the man steals a priceless piece of jewelry worn by Georgia that Mack kept with him as a tangible reminder of his beloved wife.
The mysterious hitchhiker is trouble enough, but Mack’s troubles are compounded when contraband is smuggled onto his rig for transport to his destination of Chicago. A couple of petty criminals, working for a malevolent crime boss incarcerated in the Jordan Unit, stash the goods into Mack’s trailer. The hapless pair hatch a scheme to enrich themselves by stealing the contraband before Mack unloads in the Windy City. The unraveling threads of their plot lead right back to the Jordan Unit.
Ben Garza, a captain with the Texas Rangers who Mack sought help from in the investigation into Georgia’s death, is watching the activity going on in the Jordan Unit. Captain Garza is gathering more evidence before making a bust. As the plot unfolds, Mack has, for him at least, a more important agenda: obtaining justice for Georgia. Both men determine her killer to be Georgia’s doctor.
A high-level, tough as nails, but clean as a whistle FBI agent also becomes involved when the investigation uncovers a sinister plot involving rogue elements inside the U.S. government.
Before he can be arrested, Georgia’s killer leaves his position at the Medical Center in Kerrville and visits Mack’s company to make inquiries about his whereabouts. Mack had angered the doctor with the content of a series of messages he delivered at his church. He determines he is the real target of the doctor’s wrath. After destroying his church ministry, the doctor threatens to destroy his new life on the road as well. Mack suspects he is being followed and is in the sights of a killer who plots a revenge no one could have seen coming.
The hapless pair of thieves, the crime boss, and the government Black Hats all have their own agendas. And each believes something different about what is contained in the contraband smuggled into Mack’s trailer. But all of them are trumped by a possessed and determined killer. Mack knows nothing about the contraband until near the end. What it contains is far worse than anyone imagined.
Throughout the novel, the hitchhiker is a mysterious character who is never seen by anyone but Mack. He is usually referred to as the hitchhiker throughout. Only Mack calls him by his name all the way to a surprise ending that leaves each reader with his or her own interpretation as to the identity of the hitchhiker.

The Sojourner’s Road Homecauses us to reflect upon the spiritual battle raging all around us–a battle for our mind. The reason for this vicious and intense battle is that our minds are our greatest asset. When the things of the world cloud our minds, it becomes easy for us to feel lost and lose focus. We are unable to hear God, and so our sojourn here is without direction. We lose sight of what it is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and struggle to find a way back to Him.
The Sojourner’s Road Homewill help you find your way back. When we trust in God, we are not aimlessly wandering through life. He has a plan for each of us. This world is not our home. Heaven is our home. Our journey leads us home to God.

The Sojourner's Road Home is an excellent resource for anyone new to the Christian faith who is struggling to figure out what the next steps in this journey are. Kelly Mack McCoy does an excellent job of laying out Biblical truth in a line-upon-line and precept-upon-precept manner. Even as an older Christian, I found much-needed reminders of truth that have given the importance of my faith a fresh perspective.
The Sojourner's Road Home will help solidify your faith and give you practical truths that can be put into practice daily. This is an easy-to-understand breakdown of the Christian life that is simple enough for a child to learn from, yet deep enough that the most experienced Christian should read it to gain an understanding of why we do what we do. If you have not read The Sojourner's Road Home, what are you waiting for?

The realm of Christian writing encompasses various roles, each serving unique purposes within the broader landscape of content creation. Among these roles are Christian authors, Christian ghostwriters, and Christian copywriters. While the terms "ghostwriting" and "copywriting" are sometimes used interchangeably, each fulfills distinct objectives within the sphere of Christian literature and communication.
Christian Copywriting:
Concise Messaging:
In the realm of Christian copywriting, brevity is key. Compelling messages can often be conveyed succinctly, resonating with readers without overwhelming them. For instance, iconic slogans like "Coca-Cola: The Real Thing" encapsulate the essence of a brand in just a few words, driving consumer engagement and loyalty.
Power of Verbs:
Christian copywriting leverages the potency of verbs to inspire action and engagement. By selecting dynamic verbs that evoke a sense of urgency or importance, copywriters can effectively prompt readers to embrace faith-based products, services, or ideas. For instance, replacing mundane language with vibrant verbs can transform a sentence, captivating the audience's attention and fostering a deeper connection.
Audience Understanding:
Effective Christian copywriting necessitates a understanding of the target audience's needs, aspirations, and values. By crafting messages that resonate with readers on a personal level, copywriters can cultivate authenticity and trust, strengthening the bond between the brand and its audience.
Emotional Appeal:
In the realm of Christian copywriting, emotional resonance plays a pivotal role in fostering meaningful connections with readers. By weaving compelling narratives and heartfelt anecdotes, copywriters can elicit emotions, inspiring readers to embrace faith-based principles and products with conviction and enthusiasm.
Ethical Integrity:
Maintaining ethical integrity is paramount in Christian copywriting endeavors. In a world fraught with misinformation and deception, honesty and transparency serve as foundational principles guiding ethical content creation. By upholding these values, Christian copywriters can instill confidence and credibility in their messaging, fostering enduring relationships with their audience.
Christian Ghostwriting:
Personalized Voice:
Successful Christian ghostwriting entails capturing the unique voice and perspective of the client while infusing the narrative with authenticity and sincerity. By establishing a genuine rapport with clients and adeptly reflecting their personalities in the written work, ghostwriters can produce compelling content that resonates with readers on a profound level.
Active Listening:
A cornerstone of effective Christian ghostwriting is the art of active listening. By attentively engaging with clients and discerning their thoughts, experiences, and aspirations, ghostwriters can authentically convey their stories with accuracy and empathy, fostering a deeper connection between the author and the audience.
Confidentiality Commitment:
Respecting client confidentiality is paramount in Christian ghostwriting engagements. Upholding strict confidentiality safeguards the integrity of the author-client relationship, fostering trust and confidence in the ghostwriting process. Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) serve as essential tools for ensuring the privacy and discretion of sensitive information shared during the collaboration.
Adaptive Flexibility:
Each Christian ghostwriting project presents unique challenges and opportunities, requiring adaptability and flexibility on the part of the ghostwriter. By embracing fluidity and openness to feedback, ghostwriters can navigate diverse literary landscapes with agility and finesse, ensuring the seamless realization of the client's vision.
Relinquishing Ownership:
In Christian ghostwriting, relinquishing ownership of the narrative is an integral part of the creative process. While ghostwriters play a pivotal role in shaping and articulating the author's story, ultimately, the narrative belongs to the author. Embracing this principle allows authors to share their testimonies and insights authentically, empowering them to impact lives and inspire faith in their own unique way.
In conclusion, while Christian authors, Christian ghostwriters, and Christian copywriters each contribute distinct talents and skills to the realm of Christian literature and communication, they collectively serve a common purpose: to inspire, uplift, and edify audiences with messages of faith, hope, and love. Through their dedication, creativity, and ethical commitment, these professionals play a vital role in shaping the narrative of Christian discourse and enriching the lives of believers around the world.
